Lang Gui Artisan Jianshui Purple Clay Wood-fired Lotus Teapot

This one-of-the-kind teapot is made by the very best master potter Lang Gui, who is the leading Jian Shui wood-firing potter artist and a pioneer in contemporary Jian Shui bionomic naturalism craftmanship. Master Lang Gui grew up in Jian Shui and studied in wood-firing techniques in Japan. He named his studio Langgui as an ironic playfulness as Lang in Chinese means "unrespected job" or doing unvalued business. His dedication for bio-inspired clay craftmanship earned him a reputation as the most famous master potter with wood-firing in Jianshui clay. Victoria visited him during her 2023 sourcing trip and brought some of his works back to the US.

This hand-crafted teapot is an art work of master Lang Gui's studio, one treasure from a firing batch, which potters refer to as "Yao Bao". Due to the local clay having a high content of iron, master Lang Gui's teapots usually have a metallic radiance and rich color variations resulting from the firing process. Wood-firing requires a sophisticated skill set and extensive experience, typically with a very lower success rate. You can see the metallic effects on the teapots, with reddish tones and color streaks as well. Not all teapots are created equal, and not all wood-fired teapots finish so beautifully. This teapot incorporates the classic "dragon egg" Yixing teapot shape with the art of wood-firing. Also, the spout, lid and handle incorporate a lotus flower, stem and the leaf seamlessly, uniting as one. His works are beloved by many tea drinkers and pottery collectors. A truly well-made teapot worthy of owning, and a solid investment for your teaware collection. Your purchase includes a beautiful case to protect the teapot when traveling or when not in use.
