Jian Shui Purple Clay Pottery is one of the four famous classes of Chinese pottery. Jian Shui clay is extracted from the local "five color" mountain, as the soil has abundant deposits of red, yellow, purple, white, and brownish clay content, referred to by the locals as "Wu Se Tu", meaning five color soil. Iron is the richest element in this clay, so a lot of Jian Shui teapots have a black color or brownish tones.

This teapot uses the traditional style of Jian Shui relief sculpture for the artwork. Artist Ziyu studied sculpture in Jingdezhen in 2002, and in 2012, he found his passion for Jian Shui purple clay art and established his art studio Ziyu. His works contain artistic playfulness and focus more on animal sculpture and nature. The vivid images of the beetle and mantis are wonderfully whimsical. In this teapot, Ziyu created a perfect integration of artistry with natural subjects.
