Description

Yunnan Golden Tips black tea, or Dian Hong Jin Ya in Chinese, is the highest grade of Yunnan gongfu black tea. It is only composed of buds. Other Dian Hong black teas are composed of one bud, one or two leaves depending on the grade. Jin Ya means golden buds/tips, Dian Hong means Yunnan red. Dian Hong was first invented by the pioneer tea master Pei Shao Qiu (see statue photo below) in 1932 when he led a group of tea scholars to Yunnan to grow Chinese black tea. The tea varietal called Da Ye, meaning large leaves, is an ancient cultivar indigenous to Yunnan from which the famous Pu-erh tea is produced. This tea is hand-picked and hand processed, has furry, downy golden buds. It is smooth and sweet, full bodied, with a fruity aroma and a malty flavor.

I am so sad they have run out of this.

    Yunnan Black Tea

"This is the smoothest, richest Yunnan black that I have ever tasted. The dry leaves are 1" or more in length, along with some smaller, golden buds- and very fragrant. The brew is deep and chocolatey and has a lingering light, roasted flavour. It's just amazing!"

    So So

"I got a gooseneck kettle specifically so I could brew this tea according to the instructions. That was probably a waste of money. To start the aroma of the tea in the bag was very mild. When brewed for a minute, the aroma was non-existent. Extending the brewing time brought out musty, vegetal aromas I found unpleasant. The flavor was mild, but the color was nice. To my taste, going beyond 1:45 brings out some unpleasant bitter flavors. The tea has a substantial caffeine content which I really feel after 5 steeps. I did like the tannins. (or whatever the proper term is) They produced a nice mouthfeel. I found this tea disappointing. I search pretty extensively to find the highest grade of this style. The tea was indeed "golden", but I couldn't see the individual threads on the leaves that I expected from the Wikepedia article. I think I just got an old bag. (The bag I received had no date on it.) Maybe I am way off base here, but I expected more from a "premium" whole leaf tea. At least I can put the kettle to other uses."
