Jian Shui Purple Clay Teapot Mantis and Beetle Sculpture
Jian Shui Purple Clay Pottery is one of the four most celebrated types of traditional Chinese pottery. Its clay is sourced from the local “Five-Color Mountain,” rich in red, yellow, purple, white, and brown clay—collectively known as Wu Se Tu (“five-color soil”). High in iron content, this unique clay often gives Jian Shui teapots their signature black or earthy brown tones.
This teapot showcases traditional Jian Shui relief sculpture, crafted by artist Ziyu. After studying sculpture in Jingdezhen in 2002, Ziyu discovered his passion for Jian Shui purple clay and founded his own studio in 2012. Known for his playful and nature-inspired style, Ziyu specializes in animal motifs. The vivid beetle and mantis on this teapot reflect his imaginative approach, blending artistic charm with the beauty of the natural world.
