Genuine Yixing Zisha Teapot Calabash Gourd Zhu Ni Hulu 朱泥葫芦壶
Gourd, or "Hulu" in Chinese, is one of the eighteen famed Man Sheng classic styles. As its name suggests, it is shaped like a gourd. Since "hulu" has the same pronunciation as happiness and prosperity in Chinese, so also the teapot implies auspiciousness and longevity. This teapot incorporates the original reserve of the Yixing Zhu Ni red clay that is less commonly found on the market today. It has a large base and body which allows tea leaves to fully open. The lid style completes the "hulu" theme with a gourd stem handle. The spout is straight and slightly pointed upward for easy pouring.
For your reference, the picture below is Victoria standing beside the marker for the original #4 Yixing Zisha Huang Long Shan (黄龙山) mining site. Behind Victoria is the Zisha clay rock.
Zisha is known to have the ability to adapt and enhance the tea flavor. Over a period of time the surface of the tea pot can reflect the color of the tea that it brews and become glazed. The process of the surface becoming glazed called "yang hu", literally meaning "raise the teapot" in Chinese. Chinese tea people regard this process as a fun part of tea enjoyment.
A new Zisha teapot should be seasoned before use: soak the Zisha teapot in a steel pot, with the water fully covering the teapot, and boil the water for a half hour to one hour. After boiling has completed, carefully remove the teapot, and rinse.
